Military masterpiece was dubbed the “sand and sand cannon” of the Central region

Ky Anh Tunnels (Tam Thang Commune, Tam Ky City, Quang Nam Province) is a secret military work underground, like a solid “sand fortress” of the Central. During the anti -American resistance war, the Ky Anh Tunnels became the important hiding, fighting and logistics place of the army and people of Quang Nam, marking many glorious feats.

With a total length of about 32 km, this is one of the three largest tunnel systems in Vietnam (after Cu Chi Tunnels and Bay Moc Tunnels). This article will discover the special features of Ky Anh Tunnels – from the scale, historical role, design structure to today's sightseeing experience.

The unique scale and structure of Ky Anh Tunnels

According to VnExpress, Ky Anh Tunnels began to be dug up by the locals in May 1965, in the context of the fierce war escalating in Quang Nam, and basically completed in 1967. The tunnel system is located about 1.6 m deep under the ground, the width is only 0.5–0.8 m and a height of 0.8–1 m – the adult who wants to move inside the right back or the ground.

According to the Vietnam Law Newspaper, the Tunnels network has a chessboard design with many winding corners, a total of intertwined throughout the two villages Thach Tan and Vinh Binh. Many secret tunnel branches are dug through the floor of people, wells, kitchen … to create hiding and escape right in familiar residential areas. The gates of the tunnel are also cleverly disguised as straw, cow stables, bamboo dust or garden ditches – places that are less suspicious. Thanks to the advantage of being fluent in the terrain, Ky Anh army can secretly enter and exit in the heart of the village that the enemy is hard to detect.

Because of being dug in the coastal white sand, Ky Anh tunnel requires special construction techniques compared to the tunnels of hard land. To avoid landslides, the tunnel must penetrate the clay layer and the soil (laterite) under the removable sand layer. The whole process of tunneling is done manually at night, under the participation of local soldiers, guerrillas, women, farmers and young people in the commune. They only use hoes, shovels, crowbars and baskets, baskets to transport excavated soil away. Although rudimentary and hard, Ky Anh people secretly expanded each tunnel, connecting the “underground battle” solidly in the middle of the homeland.

Inside the Ky Anh Tunnels there are many functional areas for the long -term resistance war. In the central area under Thach Tan communal house, the people built a solid command tunnel (with concrete pouring) as the workplace of the commune leaders and communicated with the entire tunnel system. Along the main tunnel routes, there is a widely spent aid to give first aid and take care of many wounded soldiers.

There are also combat tunnels, food tunnels, weapons and secret information stations connected to each other to ensure that the resistance forces can live and fight right underground. Every time the enemy swept, Ky Anh guerrillas could hide into these secret tunnels; If unfortunately discovered a tunnel, they will quickly use the bee lid to seal the part to preserve the rest. Thanks to the structure of many layers of door and “waist” tunnel, the tunnel can isolate the enemy or prevent toxic gas if it is attacked, protecting the safety of people inside.

Thach Tan communal house plays a special role in the tunnel system. This 300 -year -old ancient communal house is located in the “pharynx” position of the tunnel network. Information from Gia Lai newspaper said that under the communal house is a secret basement used as a food warehouse, medicine and a place to treat wounded wounded soldiers in an endangered time.

Legend has it that during the Thach Tan communal house, two armored vehicles and 4 other tanks of the enemy chained were to level up, but strangely, instead of the pillars of the communal house, it was still as strong as the resilient will of the people of Ky Anh. From the secret tunnel under the communal house, if the situation is in danger, guerrillas can follow the underground line to escape to the mouth of the village pit – a secret way to lead to the lagoon river right in the village.

In addition, the communal house also has an old tree (large wooden tree) that Ky Anh militia used as an overhead observatory. Thanks to hiding on the canopy more than 26 m high, reconnaissance we monitor the enemy's movement in the region and promptly alert to the tunnel when needed. For example, through the signal of the dandruff in the village well, people on the ground can notify officials in the tunnel that the enemy is withdrawing or scouring. These unique initiatives have contributed to helping the Ky Anh Tunnels to become a solid “copper” in the middle of the sandy area.

The historical role of the Central Military masterpiece in the resistance war

Born from the need to “cling to the land, clinging to the village” in the situation of Binh Dinh enemy, Ky Anh Tunnels became an extremely dangerous underground resistance base. This place is a safe shelter for hundreds of local people and officials in front of the US military bombs – the Saigon government.

At the same time, the tunnel is the secret place of the guerrilla forces of Ky Anh commune and the main army when they return to the troops in the suburbs. Based on the interlaced tunnel system, the army and people of Ky Anh persevered in the enemy's foot, both preserving the force and waiting for the opportunity to counterattack.

According to VnExpress, from the heart of the tunnel, guerrillas can suddenly ambush the opponent, and then quickly “dive”, causing the enemy to be confused. In fact, history recorded from 1965 to 1975, the army and people of Ky Anh fought more than 1,000 large and small matches, destroyed more than 3,700 enemies, shot down 3 aircraft and destroyed 15 enemy military vehicles in the commune. These impressive figures show that the tunnel has made an important contribution to the Tam Ky land to stand firm in the rain of bombs and storms.

The Ky Anh Tunnels are not only the local defense area but also contribute to the logistics support for the regional battlefield. Due to the system of food tunnels in many directions, this was once a secret route to transport food and ammunition from the coast to the Quang Nam mountainous area. War Invalids from the front line were also taken to the first aid tunnel before moving to safety base in the West.

It can be said that Ky Anh became a reliable “rear”, right close to the armpits, contributing to the post -widespread people's war. Because of that historical stature, in 1994, Ky Anh commune was honored to be awarded the title of “Hero of the People's Armed Forces” by the State.

In 1997, Ky Anh Tunnels were ranked national historical monuments, becoming a traditional red educational address for the young generation of Quang Nam.

Today, Ky Anh Tunnels are still the pride of the people of Tam Ky when mentioning a time of fire. The tunnel is preserved and embellished partly to serve tourism, and continue to be a vivid evidence to prove the strong will of the army and people of Quang Nam in the resistance.

Experience to visit the current Tunnel

After many decades, most of the original Tunnels systems have collapsed naturally or damaged. Currently, about 200 m of tunnels have been restored and reinforced firmly to welcome visitors. Visitors can enter the door of the tunnel right under the floor of Thach Tan communal house and then follow the dark and low underground section, try the feeling of getting under the tunnel like the soldiers in the past. The small light bulbs are installed along the aisle, enough to see clearly the red wall and the solid clay dome. The atmosphere in the tunnel slightly moist and low but cool. Many guests, especially the children, showed interest when they both stooped in a narrow tunnel, imagining the scene of the liberation soldier hiding right at the foot of the enemy.

Besides exploring the tunnel, visitors can also visit the traditional house right in the monument. This is the place to display many artifacts of the army and the people of the war, from iron hats, rudimentary weapons, clothes to kerosene lamps, kitchen … all are carefully preserved, helping to recreate some life and fighting of the previous generation. Right at Thach Tan communal house, the cross can burn incense to commemorate the money and heroic martyrs, Vietnamese heroic mother of the homeland is worshiped solemnly inside the communal house. The scenery of peaceful villages with banyan trees, ancient wells, and mossy communal houses makes visitors feel like the backward of time with the “fire land” in the past.

In particular, the explanation at the monument is a local historical witness. Sharing with Gia Lai newspaper, Mr. Huynh Kim Ta – was born and raised in Thach Tan village – for many years volunteered to be a guide and manager of the tunnel, passionately recounting the glorious stories in his homeland.

Although not well -trained in tourism, he explained very attractive and emotional, both narrating the event and illustrating vividly on the spot. As a result, visitors (mostly students, students and veterans) easily visualize the tunnel diagram and deeply understood “each inch of underground land” has been used ingenious in the war. Many young people who left the tunnel were still compensated before the sacrifices and courage of his father's class, inspired by the true narrative of the previous person.

Currently, Ky Anh Tunnels relics open free for the public to visit. Each year, this place welcomes about 20,000 visitors, only 8,000 in 2020 is reduced to the influence of Covid-19 translation. Tourists often combine the tunnel with the cultural exploration of Tam Ky village.

Right in Thach Tan village, traditional sedge mat weaving is still maintained for generations – this is also the secondary profession that the ancestor of Ky Anh brings when reclaiming the village. Visitors to the tunnel thus have the opportunity to see local artisans showing mats and understanding the rustic indigenous cultural life, creating an interesting experience after the “tunnel” journey. If you are lucky, you can also meet a few old men and old men in the commune – those who have directly participated in the tunnel or the revolution – to hear them recount the unforgettable “living in the sand” memories.

With all that historical and humanistic values, Ky Anh Tunnels today are both an attractive attraction and a “historical class” of the younger generation of patriotic tradition right in their homeland.
